The Turbine Hall: A Cathedral of Industry and Art
The heart of Tate Modern is the magnificent Turbine Hall, a space that once housed the electricity generators of Bankside Power Station. This cavernous hall is five storeys tall and runs the entire length of the building, measuring 155 metres long and 35 metres high. Since the gallery opened in 2000, this vast industrial space has become a world-renowned venue for large-scale, specially commissioned installations by contemporary artists.
Artists from Louise Bourgeois to Olafur Eliasson have transformed the hall, challenging public perceptions of what art can be. Standing in this space, with its raw concrete walls, steel girders, and the original overhead crane still in place, is an experience in itself. It serves as a powerful reminder of the building's industrial past and its spectacular rebirth as a global centre for modern art.
